thanks to all for the ride today 70 klicks on my phone thingy with 2 coffee stops ack home and snugged up just as the snow started. result
Good ride boys! Bit chilly like, min -7.2C…and some hallucinations, thought I saw an ice hockey game on a duck pond….?
Nice ride. Good company and at least it was not windy or raining !
Check out the wind chill – http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=windchill+-6.8C+at+25mph
Good ride, though not sure what happened to my legs on the way up surprise……was never gonna be in contention for the KOM jersey.
It got rather quick, that young Andrew firstly, but then we upset a Sheffrec guy by flying past him on Surprise and it continued even quicker above the Fox House – bpm hit 190!!
Sounds like I got off lightly going back via Grindleford & Baslow !

Just pulling this to the top of the messages for the weekend in case anyone missed the original posting earlier this week – last chance before it goes on ’general release’ on eBay next week – drop me a line if interested…
…I’m just about to get all retro for the coming season and have a new steel-framed toy on order and I will be selling my virtually new, full carbon Bianchi Sempre to help fund it – so I thought I’d give my fellow Squadrists the first chance to buy before I advertise it elsewhere.
The bike is the current 2012 model – bought last July so only six months old (and barely ridden during November and December as I was away) – only 940 miles of mostly dry use in total, cleaned after every outing, kept indoors and generally in excellent condition.
The frame is 53cm and finished in matt black (bare carbon) with Celeste highlights and details – it’s been a joy to ride, light and very responsive – looks really stunning in an understated way. It’s the current top spec version so has full Campag Athena 11 speed groupset (50/34 compact and 12/27 cassette), Athena skeleton brakes (in black), as well as Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels, San Marco Ponza saddle, FSA stem and Reparto Corse bars. Comes complete with two Elite bottle cages and Bianchi Celeste water bottles, all original documentation, owner’s manuals etc.
I paid around £2700 and am open to reasonable offers so if you’re thinking of upgrading (or even downgrading depending what you’re currently riding!) for the start of the new season, it’s a great opportunity to pick up this stunning bike at a significantly lower price.
Please drop me a line if you’d like more details – lots of photos that I can email (some pics online here – mine’s the same model as this but with slightly different wheels – http://www.epic-cycles.co.uk/Bianchi_Sempre.html – scroll right to the bottom of the page for my version – which just happens to be called ’the Squadra!’)
Feel free to come and take a look in person, I’m out in the middle of the Peak District in Tideswell and around most daytimes, evenings and weekend.
Thanks! -

Any plans for a ride on Saturday, I’ve not made the last few but going stir crazy now?
Just looked at the forecast and it’s saying a high of a balmy -1 !.
I’m planning to be there though !
Will be there mate….call route sat AM dependent on the weather …cant tell whether meeting half an hour later is gonna help it warm up or whether its gonna be Baltic all day..
Finally over my lurgie so will be out this weekend. Unfortunately childcare duties on Saturday so doing Sunday morning instead.
Managed to do a couple of easy session on my new rollers. Feels like trying to stand on a beach ball at first! Nice to have an element of danger added to being sat in the garage.Expecting to be out Sat p.m again i’m afraid. Juggling family time and all that. Have a good one if i don’t see you.
Yep, out Saturday all being dry! Could do the east route again, two choices Paul G suggested this with cafe stop at Nonnas in Cfield on way back:
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=348086
55 mile – 3,000ft ascent OR my suggestion, 60 miler SE including Clumber:
http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/67129918/
Two suggestions for the back pocket?
I have got to be back for 1 this week as i need to take my summer bike to the shop and havent had time last 2 weeks so shorter options better for me or i may peel off a bit earlier..
Ride your summer bike – drop it off on the way back and Mick will give you a ”backy” to Crookes :0)
Noticed from Paul’s stats last week we only did 47 miles – but had 2 punctures and didn’t set off until 9.15am -perhaps a more prompt start would help…we need to be doing 50ish miles min?
This is a slightly shorter version of my original idea 83km 882m climb. An option if we need to make it a bit shorter: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=348704
I’m game for something different…well, within reason
What’s wrong with the bike mate?
The cable guide that pinged off on Monsal needs sorting again..
Are you taking it back to Planet X then? You might get a new frame from them.
Yes mate, they are pop riveted on so i would imagine they will just put a new one in,the crank is wobbly too so gonna have that looked at and have it serviced.
I got a new crank from PX under warranty – wobbly too..still waiting for their decision on the bottle cage inserts, two are ineffective…could be new frame too…
Just looked on the Met office for Worksop. Guess what – the winds going to be gusting up to 20mph. Nowt like a bit of wind chill.
More n’ likely away this w/e – gives me time to sort bike out too – enjoy the frostbite;-)

Couple of spaces available for the Manchester Velodrome session Sat 18th Feb 8-10pm. Come ride the track of the stars. Great practice for Rollapaluza!
Hi Rob, how’s it work? I’ve never ridden on the track before, is it geared up for track virgins?
Virgins simply have to ride backwards 3 times round the track blind-folded and naked whilst chanting ’Chris Hoy is a god amongst men and we are not worthy to ride in his aura’.
Basically, we have exclusive use of the track for 2 hours with a coach. There’s a mix of experienced and (so far) 2 or 3 virgins. The coach will send the experienced riders off round the boards whilst concentrating on the virgins. You’ll be flying round in less than 15 mins and then we put the hammer down and bust some drills, races and sprints.
It’s an absolute riot, go for it!
Thanks Rob, sorry I can’t make the 18th but put me down for the next session please
Hi Rob, are the places still up for grabs? If so please sign me up and let me know any other details I need.
Yep, there’s room. What size bike? PM me your email and I’ll send you the size guide from the track.

Great ride today guys, here is the stats:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/145263554Nice one Paul – excellent day out, shows what there is ”out east” – but couldn’t we have done just 1 foot more climbing!
Despite the pain and the lack of caffeine great day out. Just got to do all the washing up for the next 6 months
Canny ride today gents, cheers to Keith for the scenic route and to Mick for keeping me company on that last grinder!
ps. think I’m cursed:
1st ride = busted overshoes, 2nd ride = lost computer, 3rd (today) = downhill blowout + new tyre, tube & levers (smashed me shite ones in a wee strop!)
Love it:-)Good ride, despite heading east we did some climbing, nice route by keith and a good laugh too with punctures, wheels falling off and a bacon butty thrown in for good measure..
Shows what great riding there is ”out east” – will look to knock about 10 miles off that one though, probably ”lose” going north to Wentworth – and would return to Sheffield via Holmesfield and drop to Totley, rather than Meadowhead (not a lot in it).
Will also look for a 50 miler slightly further south to include Clumber etc – may need it again next Saturday by the sounds….until the next time.
Maybe something like this ? (not Clumber but Hardwick with an option of a cafe stop at Nonnas Chez Vegas ?): http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=348086
Paul – cracking route, I’ve no probs with that – getting out of Sheff is the issue – up hill generally to Renishaw, I did it once…reverse of last week’s return…
I know it’s a pig to get to Renishaw which everway you do it. By going Derbyshire lane and over to Coal Aston at least you avoid the double whammy of the climb out of Dronfield bottom.

Last Saturday, Paul F was telling us all about a guy called Tommy Godwin who cycled 75000 miles in a year. As it happens there’s an article in Cycling Weekly about it: http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/531582/tommy-godwin-75-065-miles-in-a-year.html
They don’t breed them like that any more !
I like the bit about averaging 40 hours sleep a week, sleeping in fields wearing woollens that needed wringing out and learning to walk again after the event. The best bit was even after the 75000 miles he rode on for another 25000 to set the new 500 day record, all on a bike weighing 35lbs.!.!.
Even Chuck would be pushed to beat that one!
